Carlos Sainz believes the introduction of a mandatory two-stop race at the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix will increase the element of uncertainty and turn it into a bigger “lottery” this weekend. FIA World Motor Sport Council mandated each driver to make a minimum of two pit stops to enhance excitement around the challenging Monte Carlo circuit. Recent Monaco races have struggled to deliver excitement due to narrow tracks and frequent one-stop strategies dominating races. Last year’s race saw only a few drivers pitting under race conditions after an early red flag reshuffled the strategies. Sainz anticipates that cars starting further back may opt for two early pit stops and then run to the finish on hard tires, introducing more unknown factors into the mix. Despite the new rule, both Sainz and Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg underline the importance of track position in Monaco and acknowledge that luck and timing will still play crucial roles in determining race outcomes.
